Actually pigfish do exist... in Texas. Pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera) are in the grunt family and are good bait for most bottom fish. Tarpon are also particularly fond of them. Hmmmm. <br><br>I also revised "Uther is Sick". I'll be uploading high resolution wallpaper soon (even for those of you with 30 inch cinema displays- gee whiz!). As far as other dribbles, I'm (painfully) working on a children's book about writers on an island, designing materials for the NYC Surtex show, planning a large scale reconstruction painting of Trajan's Kiosk at Philae, and CD designs for the next Trocadero record.

In 1989 an illustrated version of Little Red Riding Hood was <a href="http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/banned-books.html" target="_blank">banned</a> in two California school districts. This was apparently because Little Red Riding Hood was shown carrying alcohol (presumably wine) to her grandmother, and some were worried about the inclusion of alcohol in a children's story. Author Charles Dickens is known to have said "Little Red Riding Hood was my first love. I have the impression that, if I had been able to marry her, I would have known perfect happiness." <br><br>And yes, the bones are real.</td> </tr></table><br><br>]]>

<p>I created this illustration using Maya, Photoshop and apple cider. The inspiration derives from reading a lot of Italo Calvino's Italian Folktales, which has nurtured my indulgence in dark, "fantasy" landscapes and moods. </p>

The inspiration behind this entirely paper mask derived partly from my long attraction to greek mythology, and the rest in the transformative delight of masks I made as a child. Violent, feminine, demonized- Medusa seemed an enjoyable choice for a project meshing the two.

Concept art for my maya animation "Metamorphosis". The illustration is a test in color, mood and lighting. It was composited from photographs, the clay model, and photoshop. I decided that the model was the central point of my animation, so I gave the wizard more developing time than any other elements.

<p>The wizard was initially created from self-hardening clay. His garment is raw linen applied with jade glue, the inside from conte colored rice paper, applied in the same way. His face, beard, hands and feet are all Sculpey, painted with acrylics and conte powder. The egg is Sculpey with glass fragments for texture, painted with acrylics. The egg sack is silk from a scarf I once loved but wore out. The butterfly is painted metal. The grass... is weird. It's some sort of turf material used in railroad models or something.</p>]]>

I re-designed the cover (right) based on my "Gretel" drawing. "A Wrinkle in Time" is one of my favorite children's books. Written by Madeleine L'Engle, it contains fantasy, sci-fi and even religious themes that weave in the struggle of a young girl trying to save her family from the unknown. It was published in 1962 after many rejections by publishers because it was, in L'Engle's words, "too different." The book went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award.

<p>Many particular movies have taken ideas from the book series- the concept of midichlorians were first defined in "A Wind in the Door" years before Lucas and Star Wars used the idea. </p>]]>

              Amid zombies, nazis, aliens, ninjas and/or a combination thereof, it is easy to groan at the idea of more concepts and concept art for video games. There is hope, however as traditional formulas are challenged and gaming companies are calling for innovation. Rather than focusing on demographics (<a href="http://www.thegamechair.com/?p=111" target="_blank">Maggie</a> from thegamechair.com has an excellent article about gender and gaming) it would be nice to see companies taking advantage of multiplayer environments and better game ideas. Games such as <a href="http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8372603330420559198&q=spore" target="_blank">Spore</a> which starts from a single evolutionary life cell into a complex civilization game and <a href="http://www.lovecity.tv/" target="_blank">Lovecity</a> which pushes the meaning of multiplayer altogether will expand our idea of gaming. Learning Maya has helped me understand the need for good concept art before polygon creation, and even more important - creating something that hasn't been done 1,000 times before. I'm currently working on a proposal for a multiplayer purely underwater game based on discovery/pirating/survival. In a 3D environment, it has the mathematical scale of the earth itself. On the left is one of my concept paintings done in oil for an underwater sculpture/character in the game, on the right the beginnings of the 3D build in Maya.          </p>
